The Boston Gallery Shake-up (for the visually inclined)

If you haven't seen it yet, definitely check out Cate McQuaid's piece in the Globe about the various closings and relocations of Boston's commercial galleries. This, of course, is a topic we've covered here numerous times, but the Globe piece sums it up well and provides this handy map (which I stole and posted above) showing the affected galleries and areas.

Overall, as I've written before, I don't think that this is a sign of any major downturn in the Boston art market, but the kind of turnover one would expect in a dynamic and evolving scene. News from the worldwide art market continues to be positive, and while there seems to be a lot of fluctuation at the moment, we've been through this before in the late-90's.

From McQuaid's piece:
Finally, the shakeout has been triggered in part by an unusual coincidence: Several multiyear leases on Harrison Avenue and Newbury Street, Boston's two gallery districts, are ending this year, leading to an art dealers' version of musical chairs as spaces open up.
