Pixnit Presumed Dead. The Boston-based artist Pixnit is presumed dead. A death notice for the artist was emailed from an individual close to the artist today.
Pixnit was a persona that was created by a Boston-based artist seeking to hide her identity from anti-graffiti authorities. Much of Pixnit's work, though lately accessible in galleries and museums, is still viewable in the streets and alleys around Boston and the globe. Big RED & Shiny has verified that the artist behind the Pixnit identity is alive.
Material from the aforementioned email follows:
PIXNIT(35) was last seen April 2nd when filmed by a CCTV camera near Pont Alexandre in Paris as she walked to meet other Parkour enthusiasts for a practice session. Parkour is the physical discipline of training to overcome any obstacle within one's path by adapting one's movements to the environment. Participants run along a route, attempting to negotiate obstacles through jumping, climbing and gymnastics. Police believe PIXNIT was engaged in such activity near the Seine River and maintain she is missing and “presumed dead by misadventure”. Despite an extensive poster campaign and police searches from the air, with dogs and with divers her fate remains unknown.
PIXNIT, was considered one of Boston’s most polarizing alt-art outlaws – a label which she detested. “I prefer just, artist”, she claimed in multiple interviews. Although, she had formal training and advanced degree in painting, her controversial street art, combined graffiti with a distinctive stenciling technique, which simultaneously beautified and critiqued the urban environment. PIXNIT’s work has been exhibited in venues such as the DeCordova Museum, Judi Rotenberg Gallery and the Scope Basel Art Fair.
